Program Schedule

“From the Headwaters to the Bay”-A Week at a Glance

Learning how to be a conservation leader is fun and rewarding! The Goddard Leadership Legacy Institute is packed with games, investigate studies, guest speakers, and field trips. To make the most out of the 6-day program, each day is focused on a theme that links ecological learning to environmental stewardship. Students arrive for orientation at the Ironmaster’s Mansion on Monday and must be picked up on Saturday at 3 pm.

DAY 1: Discover the Leader in You

  • Learn about yourself and how you can best work with others
  • Participate in natural challenges that help build your skills and confidence
  • Learn about the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and how the South Mountain Plays a Role

DAY 2: Water Connections and Service Leadership

  • Explore a headwater stream to learn what aquatic organisms can tell you about water
  • Become  a streamkeeper and conduct a volunteer service project with the Central PA Conservancy
  • Explore Mountain Creek and Fuller and Laural Lakes

DAY 3: Farms and Trees: How working lands play a role in watershed health

  • Learn about South Mountain farms and forests through field studies and guest speakers
  • Learn about forestry practices and hike with a professional forester
  • Travel to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Smith Island Environmental Center

DAY 4: Eco Tour of the Chesapeake Bay with Chesapeake Bay Foundation

  • Board a traditional Chesapeake Bay skipjack to conduct biological sampling, identification of marine and plant species, and dredge for oysters!
  • Learn about underwater grasses, salt marshes, and oyster restoration as well as local culture;
  • Conduct a volunteer service project and design action projects in your home community to help the Bay.

DAY 5: How to Become a Student Advocate for the Chesapeake Bay at Home

  • Visit the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Smith Island Environmental Education Center and participate in a Student Leadership Celebration for the 50th anniversary of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
  • Learn from fellow students about their action projects to improve the Bay
  • Travel back to the Ironmaster’s Mansion for a final farewell
