Program Schedule

“From the Headwaters to the Bay”-A Week at a Glance

Learning how to be a conservation leader is fun and rewarding! The Goddard Leadership Legacy Institute is packed with games, investigate studies, guest speakers, and field trips. To make the most out of the 6-day program, each day is focused on a theme that links ecological learning to environmental stewardship. Students arrive for orientation at the Ironmaster’s Mansion on Sunday and must be picked up on Friday at 5 pm.

DAY 1: Discover the Leader in You

  • Learn about yourself and how you can best work with others
  • Participate in natural challenges that help build your skills and confidence
  • Learn about the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and how the South Mountain Plays a Role

DAY 2: Water Connections and Service Leadership

  • Explore a headwater stream to learn what aquatic organisms can tell you about water
  • Become  a streamkeeper and conduct a volunteer service project with the Central PA Conservancy
  • Explore Mountain Creek and Fuller and Laural Lakes

DAY 3: Journey from the Headwaters to the Bay for a 2-day Eco Tour of the Chesapeake Bay from the Eastern Shore of Maryland

  • Board a traditional Chesapeake Bay skipjack to conduct biological sampling, identify marine and plant species, set crab pots, and dredge for oysters!
  • Learn about underwater grasses, salt marshes, oyster restoration, and local culture.
  • Explore trails, go birding, view the sunset, and play games at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s island center.

DAY 4: How to Become a Student Advocate for the Chesapeake Bay at Home

  • Make important connections about how you and your home community is linked to the Chesapeake Bay
  • Learn how and why you can help improve the health of the Bay as a student leader
  • Visit a commercial aquaculture center and oyster nursery
Day 5: Travel back to the Ironmaster’s Mansion for a wrap-up and final farewell
